Non - Keplerian rotation in the nucleus of NGC 1068 : evidence for a massive accretion disk ?

چکیده
The nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 is believed to host a supermassive black hole. Evidence for the presence of a massive central object is provided by water maser emission, which displays a linear pattern in the sky, suggestive of a rotating disk. The rotating disk hypothesis is further strengthened by the declining shape of the derived rotation curve. Similar maser emission from NGC 4258 has led to a reliable estimate of the mass of the central black hole, because in this case the rotation curve is Keplerian. In the case of NGC 1068 the rotation curve traced by the water maser is non-Keplerian. In this paper we provide an interpretation of the non-Keplerian rotation in NGC 1068 by means of a self-gravitating accretion disk model. We obtain a good fit to the available data and derive a black hole mass M • ≈ (8.0 ± 0.3) 10 6 M ⊙. The resulting disk mass is comparable to the black hole mass. As an interesting by-product of our fitting procedure, we are able to estimate the viscosity parameter, which turns out to be α ≈ 10 −2 , in line with some theoretical expectations.

The disk in the center of M87 is a prototype for gas orbiting a massive central object. Three sets of HST+COSTAR FOS and FOC observations provide strong evidence that the nuclear disk in M87 is in Keplerian rotation around a black hole with a mass of (2 − 3) × 10 9 M⊙. A deep (6 orbits), high resolution Hα+[N ii] PC2 HST image shows a trailing, three arm spiral superposed on the underlying nucl...
متن کاملThe Parsec - Scale Accretion Disk in NGC 3393
We present a Very Long Baseline Interferometry image of the water maser emission in the nuclear region of NGC 3393. The maser emission has a linear distribution oriented at a position angle of ~–34°, perpendicular to both the kiloparsec-scale radio jet and the axis of the narrow-line region. The position-velocity diagram displays a red-blue asymmetry about the systemic velocity and the estimate...

We investigate the ideas that a sizable fraction of the interferometrically unresolved infrared emission of the nucleus of NGC 1068 might originate from other processes than thermal dust emission from the torus. We examine the contribution of free-free or synchrotron emissions to the central midand near-IR parsec-scale emitting region of NGC 1068. Each mechanism is constrained with parsec scale...
متن کاملDoppler-Shift Asymmetry In High-Velocity Maser Emission From Shocks In Circumnuclear Disks
The rapidly rotating, masing circumnuclear disk in the central sub-parsec region of the galaxy NGC 4258 is remarkably circular and Keplerian, yet a striking asymmetry appears in the maser spectrum: the red-shifted, highvelocity sources are much more numerous and significantly more intense than the blue-shifted ones. A similar strong asymmetry appears also in the recently discovered, masing, cir...

The nuclear gas kinematics probed by water vapor maser emission has shown that two nearby active galaxies, NGC 1068 and NGC 4258, have a supermassive object in their nuclei and their masses are nearly comparable; a few 10 solar masses. Nevertheless, the activity of the central engine of NGC 1068 is more powerful by two orders of magnitude than that of NGC 4258. Since it is generally considered ...
